Artist Profile

Roberto Matta (1911-2002) was born Roberto Antonio Sebástian Matta-Echaurren in Santiago, Chile. He studied architecture and interior design at the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile, then served in the Merchant Marine. He started out drawing and illustrating, then transitioned to oil painting, but eventually worked in other media such as photography and video.

Matta’s “The Earth is a Man” is represented in our collection, one of a series of works that were a tribute to the poet Federico Garcia Lorca. This oil on canvas, 96×72 inches, was completed around 1942. Our print is scaled to 42×32 and available on stretched canvas.
